MySpace
safety -
what happens on MySpace, and how do you keep your children
safe?
Unless
you've been living under a rock for the past year, you've heard
about MySpace. It's a website that is immensely popular with
teens, because they can create their own
pages and say what they want, to who they want. But how safe
is MySpace? Here are three MySpace safety nightmares that you
might want to consider - and after that, tips on how they can
be avoided.
MySpace
Safety Nightmare One
Your daughter goes to the local high school. Like all her friends,
she has her own page on MySpace, where anyone can read almost
everything about her life. She lists her date of birth, her full
name, her interests, her hobbies. Thursday night she goes to
ballet, Mondays she plays the flute. For fun, she's put a picture
of herself in a bikini on her page. Nothing terribly suggestive,
just a snapshot from a nice day on the beach last summer. This
can all seem very harmless - but imagine giving this kind of
information away to a stalker or a sexual predator?
If somebody in your town were to search MySpace for students at
the local high school, he would probably find hundreds of listed
girls and boys. If he liked the look of a particular girl, it would
be incredibly easy for him to locate her. If he also knows where
she'll be at a particular time, there's no telling what might happen.
MySpace
Safety Nightmare Two
Your daughter is eleven. She's too young to have her own page
on MySpace, but her friends have told her what a cool website
it is and she wants to have a look for herself. All she's interested
in is pets - hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, rabbits - and
she thinks she'll find other kids to talk to about animals.
Her
first visit to MySpace is confusing, to say the least. Choosing
to Browse, she's presented with a page full of smiling girls
with strange names. "BabyUKnoUWantMe" she reads. "SuicidalTendencies" and "LickMyBoots"?.
There's no mention of pets, so she decides to have a look at the
MySpace blogs instead. Eventually, she does find a part of the
site called "Pets and Animals", but the pictures are
just of people and everyone seems to be using bad words a lot.
After seeing some very odd pictures, she decides to leave the site
- but how will she deal with what she's seen? Will she return to
MySpace again?
MySpace
Safety Nightmare Three
Your son is fourteen, and he can
be a bit of a handful at times. Like most teenage boys, he rarely
thinks before he speaks, and this has gotten him into trouble sometimes.
Lately, he's been spending a lot of time on MySpace, and although
you're not exactly sure what he's doing there you're relieved because
at least he's at home. When he's at the computer, you don't have
to worry about his safety - do you?
One
day, there's a fire at his school. Upsetting, yes, but you're
not overly concerned because it was put out very quickly. The
following day, the police knock on your door and ask to speak
to your son. After a tip from some other students, they had a
look at your son's MySpace page. Apparently, it's full of hateful
rants about the school and several threats about "burning the whole thing
to the ground". You're shocked. You had no idea.
Fortunately,
these MySpace safety nightmares can be avoided with the help
of SpyBuddy.
This computer monitoring tool lets you keep an eye on your
children at all times, including MySpace friendships, blog postings,
website visits, instant messaging and email. You can also block
off certain websites completely, or allow them at set times when
you know what you'll be around to keep an eye on things. Monitoring
software can help you keep your children safe online - so that
you can prevent safety nightmares before they have a chance to
happen.
